Journey to Beijing

27/08/2008 5:00:00 AM
Bowning Primary has successfully taken part in the Australian Sports Commission challenge of taking a “Journey to Beijing” during the 2008 Olympic Games. As part of the Active After-school Communities program, Bowning Primary School was invited to take part in this virtual walk of 9000km.

Using pedometers, Bowning Primary School students counted the number of steps they have made during their Active After-school Community sessions. Bowning students participate in two, sixty-minute sessions of physical activity after school each week for seven weeks each term.

During the past six sessions, Bowning students have been stepping up the pace. Each student was issued with a pedometer, and following the guidelines set by the Australian Sports Commission, each student aimed to take 1600 steps per session. The combined target number of steps for Bowning students to reach Beijing on this virtual journey before the close of the Olympic games was 300,000. Bowning Primary School students were pleased to make this target on Thursday.

They are now working hard to collect another 300,000 steps for the journey home before the close of the Term3 Active After-school Communities program.
