Yass Roos have won their first premiership with a compelling 45-point win over Gungahlin on Saturday. Labelled ‘paper favourites’ before the match, the Roos answered critics with a dominant display at Ainslie Oval, extracting sweet revenge on the Jets, who humiliated the Roos in the major semi-final just two weeks before.
Outnumbering their opposing supporters three-to-one, the Roos support base was filled with delight from the opening bounce, as Chris Dawe and Ben McCallum kicked early goals to set the tone for the day.
The opening 25 minutes was by-far-and-away the Roos most convincing quarter for the year. Filled with passion, foundation player Dave Willersdorf won most of the ruck contests, keeping the Jets’ midfielders on the back-foot and their defensive line staggered.
By the first break Yass had kicked five goals to Gungahlin’s one, to possess an imposing 26-point lead.
The Jets rallied during the second quarter’s opening minutes, kicking the first goal, rousing up the hopes of a fight back. Momentum was with Gungahlin, who began to control the match temporarily. Wayward kicking however would haunt the home side, who failed to bridge the gap between the two teams.
Roos supporters were on their feet as players left the field at half-time. Three further second quarter goals gave Yass breathing space and a 38-point lead.
Once again the Roos backline absorbed intense pressure from their opponents, who were intent on staging a grand final comeback. The Jets conjured up all their energy, throwing everything they had at the Roos for the entirety of the third quarter. Yass, however, weathered the storm and held a commanding 37-point buffer at three-quarter time.
By the time the final quarter began, the Jets were out on their feet and the Roos were ready to pounce. A six goal final term sealed the contest and gave the Yass Roos their first premiership.
Ruckman Dave Willersdorf was named best on ground and Yass Town was ready to celebrate its third football grand final success in four years.
