Roos cruise past disjointed Juggernauts

9/07/2008 5:00:00 AM
Yass Roos have made it 12 wins from as many matches in season 2008 with a powerful 185 point win over Murrumbidgee Juggernauts on Saturday.

Forward pocket Chris Dawe landed eight goals, while partner in crime Jason Anderson kicked six and captain Brendan Foran seven. Full-forward Foran is edging towards the Roos record for most number of goals kicked in a season, set by Liam Brandon with 73 goals in 2007. Foran has kicked 56 goals to date, a remarkable achievement given he didn’t make the move to the forward line until round four.

Yass kicked 31 goals during its most comprehensive win this season. The result was never in doubt for the visitors, who jumped out of the blocks to lead 8.4.52 to Murrumbidgee’s soul point at the first break.

Centre-half-back Doug Watchorn continued his outstanding form, mid-fielder Mick Foran racked up possession after possession and Scott Waters played his best game for the club.

Murrumbidgee’s lone goal came in the final minutes of the game courtesy of a free kick and set shot on goal.

Doug Watchorn was voted players’ player, ahead of Jason Anderson and Mick Foran.

With five rounds remaining the Roos focus remains on finishing in the top two, giving them two chances come finals time. Yass will contest the playoffs for the first time since 2004, when they were bundled out in the preliminary final.

Yass will look to extend their unbeaten run to 13 this weekend, when they come up against seventh placed ADFA.
