 Roos eyeball Gungahlin

Roos eyeball Gungahlin

Yass Roos have shifted their focus to this weekend’s match-up with Gungahlin, a team also undefeated after 11 rounds. The Roos maintained their position at the top of ladder with a scrappy 73-point win over the Cats in Cooma on Saturday.

The Roos rarely seemed troubled by the Cats in a less than entertaining contest. Kicks rarely found their targets, more often than not shots for goal strayed wide, and each time the ball went over the boundary-line players had to wait for a minute while spectators jumped a paddock fence and searched for the ball in shin-high-grass.

Despite the messy performance, the Roos still had plenty of good players. Doug Watchorn and Dave Brown were faultless on the half-back-flank, Lachlan Webb refused to let his opponent get his hands on the footy, ruckman Dave Willersdorf steamrolled anyone who stood in his way and Canberrans Kim Boyle and Ben McCallum slotted three goals each.

While coach Terry Lemon was disappointed with the way the match unfolded, it has to be noted Yass went to Cooma one man short on the bench and missing the likes of Leigh French, Ryan Cox, Jason Anderson, Adrian Paull and Mick Foran.

Aware of the danger posed by Yass’ leading goal scorer Brendan Foran, Cooma opted to double-tag the Roos’ skipper. Running free from the backline, Dave Brown pushed up into the forward 50 and kicked two goals. Brown’s always maintained if given the chance in the forward-line he’d score goals, and after the weekend’s 10 minute spree it looks as if the argument has merit.

After a sluggish opening, the Roos found their stride and booted 10 goals by half-time to lead 10.6.66 to Cooma’s 3.3.21.

With the backline not conceding any points in the third term, goals to Ben Scroope, Ben McCallum and Kim Boyle put the result beyond doubt.

The game’s final quarter fizzled out somewhat, and by full-time it’s fair to say most players were pleased to hear the final siren. Saturday’s victory was the Roos 10th in 2008 and their 13th in succession since late 2007. Doug Watchorn won the players’ player award ahead of Willersdorf and Dave Brown.

With the annual Cooma trip out of the way, players, coaches and supporters now turn their attention to the weekend’s match with the Gungahlin Jets. Gungahlin will bring impressive form to Yass this Saturday after beating Harman by 102 points, a team the Roos defeated by 52.

After sweeping aside all before them in 2008, Yass will be given a true indication as to where they stand in the pecking order.
