Roos sew up top spot

6/08/2008 5:00:00 AM
The Yass Roos have claimed the 2008 minor premiership with a scratchy 62-point win over Eastlake on Saturday.

Full-forward and leading goal scorer Brendan Foran and versatile mid-fielder Andy Morgan were casualties, joining eight team mates on the injured list.

Mick Foran played his best game in Yass colours, ably supported by half-back-flank Dave Brown, on-baller Ben Scroope, ruckman Dave Willersdorf, centre-half-back Doug Watchorn and ruthless forward Leigh French.

The 10 goal win was far from memorable, but certainly crucial after Yass lost skipper Foran in the first ten minutes. Foran has been a revelation since his move up-forward. The former on-baller has amassed 59 goals this season to hold the mantle as the competition’s premier forward. Damage to ligaments surrounding his AC joint will keep him out for the next three weeks.

Ever consistent footballer Andy Morgan had his 50th match celebrations dampened when he came from the field with wrist pain in the third term. Further assessment revealed minor tissue damage, more than likely sidelining him for one week.

Complacency was apparent in the opening 25 minutes as Eastlake threw themselves mercilessly at the football in front of an impressed home crowd. The visitors struggled to come away with clean possession and were somewhat lucky to hold a slim one-point advantage at the first break.

Centreman Mick Foran injected himself in the second quarter as Yass shook off the cobwebs to blast out to a 33-point half time lead.

Eastlake continued to press in the third quarter as the Roos were swamped with fatigue. Had it not been for Yass’ resilient backline the Demons may well have mounted more scoreboard pressure.

As it was, the Roos did enough to record another win against a much-improved Eastlake Demons. The victory was Yass’ 15th this season and 18th in succession.

“Originally, I was a little disappointed with the way we played,” Coach Terry Lemon said. “But, on reflection it’s a better win than I’m giving credit for.

“Mick Foran played the best game I’ve seen him play, Ben Scroope had another solid game and Dave Brown was excellent. I have to give credit to the guys who stepped up and got us over the line.”

On Saturday, the Roos square off with Harman at Joe O’Connor Park. The round 18 clash will prove to be a huge test for the undefeated Roos, who will be without three representative players in Ryan Cox, Ben Serafin and Brendan Foran.

Congratulations to Warrick Dunstan and his lovely wife Yasmin, who celebrated the birth of a healthy baby boy last week.
