Sweet 16 – Gungahlin next on Roos hit list

13/08/2008 11:03:00 AM
The Yass Roos have capped off a remarkable regular season with a 74-point win over Harman on Saturday.

A brilliant third quarter from Yass shook off a heated Harman outfit in freezing conditions at O’Connor Park.

Fifth placed Harman went about unsettling the Roos, who were en route to their first finals campaign since 2004. The visitors threw their opponents off their game in the first half with persistent niggling and hefty tackles

However goals to stand in full-forward Daniel Mowbray, forward-pocket Guy Luckie, inform Ben McCallum and joint captain Leigh French bolstered the Roos lead to 33-points at the main break.

Yass put their foot on the gas in the third term, blowing their pushy opponents out of the water with a seven goals to nil quarter. Ben Serafin, returning from a quad injury, grew in confidence as the game progressed, on-baller Ben Scroope racked up possession after possession, Daniel Poidevin kicked a fantastic goal on the run after a stint in the backline and Captain French led from the front with a damaging 25-minutes.

By three-quarter time the Roos had put the result beyond doubt and ensured they finished the regular season with 16 wins from as many matches.

Yass found themselves a man short for much of the final term and could be forgiven for conceding three late goals.

Leigh French displayed his best form of the season, snaring four major scores, grabbing contested marks and setting up a number of goals. French capped off a great day winning the players’ player award, marginally ahead of the versatile Ben Scroope.

Wayward kicking for goal is the only concern to come out of the match as Yass prepare for Saturday’s major semi-final against Gungahlin at Ainslie Oval. The winner of this weekend’s contest will progress to the Grand Final, to be held at Manuka Oval in just over a fortnight’s time.
