Balance in a Healthy Career

17/09/2008 5:00:00 AM
Senior Mt Carmel School students have recently completed the Australian Government ‘Balance in a Healthy Career’ program. The program introduces students to the variety of careers available in the health industry, while teaching adolescents important facets of health and fitness training and nutrition.

Interested students spent three sessions at Robbo’s Gym, were they were guided by personal trainers Ruth Burn and Dave Barrie, gym owner Garry Robinson and aerobics instructor Mandy Reid. The four trainers spoke to students about eating healthy foods, discussed what foods each pupil ate on a regular basis, took them through training drills and administered a ‘boot camp’ style fitness regime.

Ruth Burn took her chargers through core strengthening drills, Mandy Reed ran a step aerobics and bar training workout - enhancing people’s cardiovascular fitness - Dave Barrie took students through all the basics of plyometric training and ‘Robbo’ peaked the senior students strength and cardio fitness with boxing bags.

The ‘Balance in a Healthy Career’ program is another ‘Adopt a School’ project. ‘Adopt a School’ projects were designed for schools to work in partnership with public and professional organisations. Mt Carmel School recently ran a building project under the scheme, whereby students were taught first hand the skills and commitment required to become a builder. Now, the school has a bran new chicken coop to show for it.
