Sidvicious: champion bull

25/07/2008 5:00:00 AM
Legendary bull Sidvicious made a successful return to the arena for just the second time in fours years at the Professional Bull Riders Association competition in Newcastle in early June.

Fresh from local George Hempenstall’s pen, Sidvicious threw champion Canadian rider Tyler Pankewitz and popular Aussie rider Martin Carlo.

The news is sure to thrill local rodeo fans, who eagerly wait for the return of the Bundaberg Rum PBR meet in Yass on November 8 this year. Sidvicious and some of his mates from the Hempenstall pen will test some of the nation’s finest riders on that exciting November night.

After an awesome response to the bull ride in 2007, PBR hope to pencil Yass in as a permanent fixture on the calendar.

Newcastle fans were in awe of Sidvicious, the 960kg Brahman Cross Bull, and it came as no great surprise when he was crowned Champion Bull.

Hempenstall has a strong track record when it comes to breeding and buying outstanding bucking bulls. A former rider himself, Hempenstall briefly owned Chainsaw, the world’s greatest rodeo bull, and currently boasts ownership of destroyers Patches, Lab Rat and Silver City.

George has had a life long love affair with bucking rodeo bulls. Such is his devotion to his ‘lovely’ beasts, George has no difficulty naming each of his 50 or so bulls from 40 metres, quoting their record, weight and breeding details.

Famous bulls and riders from across the country will converge on Yass for the second annual PBR bull ride later this year. Organisers look forward to the night, after last year spectators resorted to climbing trees just to get a look at the action.

More details on the Bunderberg Rum PBR bull ride in Yass in November will be released closer to the night.
