 Byrne: spring time lover

Byrne: spring time lover

3/10/2008 5:00:00 AM
One of Yass’s favourite ‘tradies’ is back in the golf limelight again – Jim Byrne is the A Grade winner from the Yass and District Printers Modified Stableford last Saturday at the old Worth Street course.

Jim has been out the winner’s circle for a little while now and that fact got the aging cells of your scribe ticking over. Remembered writing a story on his good form and winning ways and a little bit of research lead to the discovery that Jim was the star act of last September. Indeed he was the September Guzzler of 2007.

The 13 marker has rediscovered his old form with an excellent 76 off the Callaways for a plus 15 in the Modified Stableford event. Seasons have come and gone, and winners too, but Jim Byrne is our spring time lover.

Another recent Guzzler winner in the form of big hitting Russell Watchorn has picked up the B Grade voucher last Saturday with +14 which included a net eagle on the 17th hole for five big points.

That man of most recent weeks, Ian Bluett, has stolen the limelight again to annihilate the C Grade contingent with an unbelievable plus 23 points. The ex 26 marker has had 84 swipes in compiling his mammoth total winning score. Net eagles have come his way on both the 4th and 14th holes. Look out B Grade – Ian is heading your way and fast.

Nearest the Pins: Bob Johnson on the 8th hole and David Ward on the 16th hole.

Ball Comp to +6: I Bluett, J Byrne, P White (an excellent +14 off 7 handicap), R Watchorn, B Topple, J Roche, P Timmer, D Douglas, R Camons, N Napper, W Scheffler, R McDonald, G Butcher, S Foxhill, J Bray, W Whyte, G Manson, D Brooker, S Evans, S Porter, T Kelly.

Number of players: 74.

(Tom Barnes back in town)

Popular young member Tom Barnes has been temporally freed from College and is back on the Yass Golf Course and scooping the loot. The strapping youngster played off his ex handicap of 23 to take the Sunday voucher with a big 44 stableford points. With an excellent birdie on the treacherous 15th saucer and six other pars Tom is serving notice that he is “not done yet”. Handicapper take note!

Nearest the Pin to N Mossop on the 16th hole.

Ball Comp to 37ocb: T Barnes, M Townsend, S Pearce, R Dickson, G Manson, T Mossop, J Brady, B Abbey.

CCR 65. No of Players: 25.

(Mid-week comp)

Two grades for the nine hole week long comp. $25 vouchers to the winners and two balls each to the runners up.

A Grade: Chris Simpson has shot a magical 2 under for the nine holes and 24pts. He gets the voucher from Russell Watchorn by one point ocb.

B Grade: Treasurer Ian Lumsden made sure there was no outside distribution of dividends when he cruised 25 gigantic points to win the voucher and the two balls with his own second best round of 21pts. That’s a wow wow win Ian!

Ball Comp to 19pts ocb: W Scheffler, S Pearce, R Hill, H Lawrence, D Douglas, P Anderson, L Puckett, R Nielson, C Phillips, R Dickson, N Bedford.

(Dads Army)

On a glorious Thursday morning Ian Bluett discovered it is easier to enter golf comps and collect the winnings then it is to rely on lottery tickets.

The “oh what a feeling” man of the moment tallied 20 winning points to be one clear of Doug Oldfield and “getting the hang of it” Clive Phillips. Peter Anderson picked up a ball with a regulation 18pts as did Lindsay Evans with 17pts.

Captain Jack asked to pass on his apologies for the time mistake. Jack does not make too many and your scribe suspects self sacrifice!
