Ashlin new Club Champ

13/06/2008 5:00:00 AM
Monday saw the final of the Yass Bowling Club Major Singles, fought out between Andrew Ashlin and Mick Penyu. The standard of bowling produced was at least equal to or better than that shown on TV and was really appreciated by the large crowd of onlookers.

After 12 ends, of which Andrew won 9, the eventual champion shot to a 14-5 lead. By 30 ends, the game appeared to be over, with Ashlin extending his advantage to 30-19.

Champion bowler Mick staged a late comeback to trail by only five shots heading into the final ends. However, Ashlin remained composed and picked up the one shot needed to take this year’s Championship 31-25.

There was some absolutely brilliant bowling by both competitors, but Andrew proved to be just that little bit more consistent on the day. Congratulations to both bowlers for a tremendous final.

(Minor singles final)

Also on Monday, the final of the Minor Singles was played between Peter Schofield and Phil Murphy. This game had more twists and turns in it than the Burrinjuck Road. ‘Schoie’ took off at the rate of knots to lead by 15-3 after 12 ends.

That was before Phil came back, reducing the margin by four shots after 20 ends. Schoie shot away again and looked to have everything wrapped up when he led 29-14 on the 31st end.

Plucky Phil, like a little terrier chasing at Schofield’s heels, refused to give in and after 40 ends gathered the lead 30-29. The pendulum looked to have swung the other way.

Alas, Schofield dug deep again to pick up two shots and the title 31-30. A magnificent game by both players and both should be congratulated for their efforts.

(Club fours championships)

On the weekend the Club fours commenced. Grant Brewer, Clarrie Roach, Graham Henderson and Phil Murphy played Jason Kelly, Peter Schofield, Danial Wilson and Rodney Wilson. The lead changed six times during this game before Phil’s side put some consistent ends together to take control and win 21-12.

The Bush boys Des, Arnold and Barry, along with John Bowden took on Rob Pollack, Greg Pryor, Ted Maher and Glen Snowden. Glen’s side led for the first 16 ends until the Bush brigade hit top gear to pick up the next five ends and the game 18-15.

Andrew Turner, Jason Howard, Breeze Howard and Andrew Ashlin played Maurice Lawton, Kel Lees, Robert Corcoran and John O’Donnell. Andrew’s side took the lead on the fifth end and were never headed, taking the game 21-13.

On Monday, The Bush boys and Dancer again played together, taking on Anthony Kennedy, Keith Kemp, Jason Dukes and Peter Jones. Barry Bush’s side led for 19 of the 21 ends. After trailing for most of the match, Peter’s side came home with a wet sail to draw the game with one end to go. They continued their late surge with a point on the last to win 19-18. A feature of this game was the great lead bowls played by one of our newest bowlers in Anthony Kennedy.

(Social Bowls)

On Wednesday, 24 bowlers took to the greens. Cliff Jones, Jason Dukes and David Cassidy recorded a 23-15 win over Tony Mather, Max Davis and Grasshopper Standen (from Young, not yours truly), with David’s side winning 14 of the 21 ends.

Grant Brewer, Peter Horton and partner had a 20-15 win over Corey Denny, Clive Langfield and Noel Bedford.

Don Bayley, Andrew Turner and Clarrie Roach scored a 23-18 win over Theo Kuster, Eric Smith and Merv Toms, with Clarrie’s side being in control for the whole game.

In a very close game Geoff Darmody, Ross Shaw and partner won four of the last six ends to edge out Keith Kemp, Jack Wales and Col Payne 23-21.

On Sunday in the mixed jackpot we had 22 players, despite the jackpot not going off. C Denny, Thelma Butt and Max Davis recorded an 18-13 win over B Charles, B Bingley and Merv Toms.

Helen MacArthur, Wilma Bingley and Paul Vitler had a 16-13 win over Anthony Kennedy, Graham Henderson and Noel Bedford.

Chris Butt, Grant Brewer and Greg Pryor were never in trouble in defeating James Mather, Ian Mather and Peter Horton 18-8.

In a game of pairs, Bernice Davis and Peter Schofield played out a 21 all draw with Lois McGregor and Rodney Wilson.

(Coming events)

On Sunday, June 15, our number two pennant side will play in the Zone pennant finals at Gundagai. We wish this team all the best and hope that they can now make the State titles.

On Sunday, June 22, the District side will play a representative side from Lachlan Valley. Our Club will be represented by Brett Penyu, Danial Wilson, Simon Cassidy, Jamie Bush, Glen Snowden and Breeze Howard.
