This week saw the first two rounds of the annual Hen of the walk competition. There were quite a few hens in the hen house at the beginning of the week, but after two rounds the hen house is starting to look bare. Numbers were down for this year’s competition as there are free range hens within the club that didn’t play.
(Round one)
Lorraine Cooke 153 points defeated Wendy Steel 117. Lorraine got off to a brilliant start scoring nine points on the second end and maximum points on the fifth end to jump to a commanding lead. Lorraine played some impressive bowls to lead from start to finish. Wendy had patches of brilliance scoring a couple of nine point ends but Lorraine was more consistent throughout the game to record a good win.
Rhonda Corcoran 154 defeated Rosie Toms 146. This was a great game with the scores even after eight ends at 40 points all. Rosie then skipped out to a good lead and kept her score moving along. To Rhonda’s credit she fought her way back into the game with some excellent bowling and was right back in the contest after scoring 10 points on the 27th end to hit the lead 136 points to 134. Rhonda’s lead was short lived, with Rosie scoring seven points on the next end. Rhonda hit back with two great ends to score seven and eight points to win the game after 30 ends.
Sue Bedford 152 defeated Thelma Butt 118. The first 10 ends saw the lead change many times to be all even on 50 points on the 10th end. In the next 10 ends Sue played some great bowls to shoot out to a good lead 119 to 81. Thelma fought back but Sue was to good reaching winning the game on the 27th end.
Jenny Jones 152 defeated Mandy Scanes 138. Jenny adjusted to the roving jack quickly and jumped out to the lead, but by the seventh end Mandy had caught up and they were even on 35 points all. Mandy then led for the next 10 ends scoring some good points only to see Jenny regain her lead by a narrow margin on the 18th end. The next nine ends saw some brilliant close bowling to have them even again on 135 points on the 27th end. Mandy had played herself into some good points only to see Jenny trail the jack back to her bowls and score a maximum count of 10 points. This late in the game Mandy found it hard to recover from the 10 point brake and Jenny went on to win the game.
Margaret Holston defeated Linda Scott by a forfeit due to Spud contracting the (bird) flu.
(Round two)
Margaret Holston 156 defeated Lorraine Cooke 124. There was some great bowling by both players with Margaret getting the upper hand early in the game scoring 10 points on the fourth end. Lorraine played some great shots only to see Margaret draw even closer to score her points. Margaret had to work hard for every point and didn’t find them easy to come by with Lorraine making her work hard all the way.
Leanne Goode 151 defeated Kath Grace 78. This game was a huge challenge for both players unable to roll a good jack. Most ends the players were playing to a jack that was nearly out of bounds making it difficult for the players on the other rinks as they had to share their rinks as the bowls were drawn in. At one stage Kath and Leanne were asked to pay double green fees as they were using more than they paid for. This was a good game with Leanne managing to adjust to the roving jack early in the game to lead all the way.
Jenny Jones 151 defeated Rhonda Corcoran 139. This was a great match up with both bowlers in hot form after coming off close wins in the first round. Rhonda and Jenny were hard to separate with the scores even on the fifth and 12th ends, with Jenny taking a slight advantage only to see Rhonda hit back and have a four point led after 20 ends, 102 to 98. Jenny then played some great bowls to nudge in front. Both players were eager to score and played for the points. Late in the game Jenny got the break scoring eight and nine points in two ends to break away to record the win in 29 ends.
Sue Bedford 150 defeated Veronica Lees 120. A good win for Sue after coming from well behind to take the win. Sue has been absent due to injury and has come back to play some great bowls. Amazing what a good physio can do or maybe it’s lucky we don’t drug test in bowls. Veronica shot out to a commanding led scoring 10 points on the fifth and nine points on the eighth. Veronica looked in control of the game only to see Sue revitalise her game with 10 points on the 20th end to put her within reach. Sue thrived on the final ends and went from strength to strength to tally up some great points to over take Veronica and record the win.
