Yass Valley’s very own Jennifer Bryce is on the ground in Beijing representing Australia at the Paralympic Games.
The Sutton resident - who had the lower half of her left leg and left arms amputated in a work related accident - got her campaign underway at the Bird’s Nest on Monday morning, finishing eighth in the Women’s seated shot put final.
While Bryce finished mid-table in the final 15, she managed to register the second best score for her specific classification.
It’s been a long journey to Beijing, one that has taken bucket loads of courage and dedication, says husband Brian. “She’s trained six days a week – three days at the gym and three on the track – for five hours a day,” Brian explained.
Watching his wife and best friend compete at the Paralympics is a dream come true for Brian and indeed the whole Bryce family. “We’re over the moon… the whole family is just so proud of her.
“After the accident, she didn’t let anything get her down… there’s just no point. She’s got the biggest heart there is. I’ll dare she’ll front up at the next Games in London in 2012.”
Australia has enjoyed considerable success in the opening days of the Games, winning six gold medals in the first three days of competition.
Bryce’s focus will shift to her next event, the Women’s F54-56 seated Javelin final, set to get underway at 7pm local time on Sunday evening. Bryce can be seen competing on ABC television, live at 7pm on Sunday.
