18s outmuscle Bulldogs

Toner Express Yass Magpies remain in second position on the ladder following a hard fought 16-8 victory over Goulburn Bulldogs on Sunday.

It wasn’t the most inspiring performance from the Magpies. Compressed attack stifled their scoring opportunities forcing them to resort to kicks in an attempt to break the Bulldogs defensive line.

The Magpies were away to a swift start when in the fifth minute Henry Paton crossed for a try in the corner. Goal kicking ace Matt Freeman, kicking into a strong wind, strolled in to convert from the touchline. Yass 6, Goulburn 0.

From this point the Magpies attack struggled. With more football and positive field position, Goulburn took full advantage. The Bulldogs scored twice in the ten minutes before half time to lead 8-6 at the break.

Knowing they had to lift their intensity the Magpies opened the second stanza showing more enterprise.

Dane Snowden crossed for a much-needed try, placing the visitors back in the box seat.

From this point the Magpies became a little blunt in attack and opted for long distance kicks to chew up metres. It paid dividends in the 17th minute of the half, when Steve Greenwood dived on a Bulldogs dropped ball to score near the posts. Matt Freeman had no difficulty converting, closing out the scoring for the match at 16–8.

Despite the sluggish performance, the Magpies were again resilient in defence. From close proximity to their line they repelled numerous Bulldogs raids, often frustrating their opponents into errors.

Phil Skillin grasped his opportunity as starting prop, putting in a wholehearted effort in both attack and defence. Brad Wylie produced another workaholic performance. In the backs Matt Freeman, Dave Simpson and Matt Simpson were solid, while centres Nick Pollack and Tom Hanson had busy games.

This Saturday the under 18s host the Southwest Brahmans at Walker Park. Kick-off 1.30pm.
