Under 18s bounce back with vengeance

27/06/2008 12:00:00 PM
The Toner Express Yass Magpies under 18s returned to the winners list with a gritty 22–12 away victory over West Belconnen Warriors.

The first half was a dour affair with the Warriors having the better field position for the opening 12 minutes, which resulted in the home side scoring a converted try. From the restart of play, the Warriors knocked-on and two plays later the Magpies capitalised through an unconverted try to Dane Snowden.

Yass were now dominating the match and following a couple of near misses scored a scintillating try right on half time. Dane Snowden chip kicked over the Warriors defence for Henry Paton, who regathered the ball at full pace and passed inside to Snowden, who scored under the posts.

Resuming the second half leading 10-6 the Magpies took only a minute to score, courtesy of a clever dummy-half play by Brad Wylie, who found Dane Snowden backing up for his third try.

The game then became a rugged affair with the Warriors reclaiming field position, however the Magpies forwards kept their line intact. Yass were reduced to 12 when the referee felt there were too many play the ball infringements. With his first touch after returning from the sin-bin, Nick Pollack burst through the Warriors defence and raced 70 metres to give the Magpies a 16 point lead with eight minutes remaining.

Right on full time the Magpies gifted the Warriors a simple try after they inexplicably were unable to clean-up a kick.

There were several good performers for Yass, most notably Captain Brad Wylie and halves Ben Warner and Dane Snowden, who took control of the game when things got tight.

Forwards Phil Skillin, Andrew Erickson, Stephen Greenwood and Josh O’Brien worked hard as did backs Tom Hanson, Stuart Wallace and Matt Freeman. Nick Pollack again showed what a dangerous attacking weapon he is.
