Rams fall short… just

The Yass Rams have suffered their fourth loss by five or less points, going down to the Cooma Red Devils on Saturday. Trekking to Cooma undermanned, Yass displayed enough enthusiasm to make up for short numbers.

Second grade Hoggets unpredictable season continued when narrowly beaten by Cooma 19-17. A number of regular first-graders pulled on jerseys for the Hoggets and nearly helped the side record an upset victory.

First grade: Cooma, who’ve been travelling well to date in the Monaro Cup, were given a scare by a Yass side still searching for their first win, something that’s not far around the corner according to Rams Coach Andrew Shannon. “Basically I’m thrilled with the way the boys are going. We’ve had a heap of injuries, we travelled to Cooma light on troops and nearly knocked off the home side… so in that regard I couldn’t ask for more. We just need to remain positive… a win is not to far away.”

Shannon remains adamant Yass still have their sights set on a semi-final berth. “Certainly, we’re still aspiring to make the top four.”

A well constructed opening 40 minutes saw the Rams head to the halftime break leading 10-5. Captain Will Grogan scored the sides opening try, converted by Luke Donnelly.

After the break, Cooma held the ascendency for a good 25 minutes. Two tries and a penalty goal nudged the score to 20 points to 10 in the home side’s favour.

With 10-15 minutes left on the clock centre Brett Waters broke the defensive line and offloaded to fullback Jordan Robinson who crashed over, breathing new life into the game.

Trailing by five with time remaining on the clock, the Rams threw everything at their more fancied opponents. However, Cooma held on grimly in the dying stages to take the competition points.

Yass have a bye this weekend before returning to Victoria Park on July 5, ready to take on the Hall Bushrangers.
