Yass Rams and Hoggets suffered a double blow at Victoria Park last Saturday, when Cooma Red Devils disposed of second grade 24-5 and first grade 27-12.
Once again first grade found themselves in the contest until the final whistle, but after trailing for much of the match, Cooma ran in three late tries to collect the points.
The Hoggets pushed their more fancied opponents for the duration, only lacking the finesse and fitness to match the men in red. George Henderson was outstanding, as was the versatile Andrew Swaffield, Captain Nathan Cooke, Bronson Sainsbury, Beau O’Mara and players’ player Damon Boulding.
In the major fixture, fans at Ram Park were treated to heavy hitting, entertaining contest. After holding the visitors at bay, the Rams found themselves on top at 12-10 deep into the second half.
Steve Graham scored a text book push over try, before silky fly-half George Gregory burst through a gap off a short ball from Brett Waters.
However, Cooma showed why they will threaten premiers Goulburn in the latter stages. They ran in three tries and 17 points to survive an almighty Yass scare.
Tough back Scott Farthing was a standout, ably assisted by props Keith Cocks and Pete Davies, fly-half George Gregory, breakaway Justin Taylor and fullback Andrew Swaffield.
This weekend the Rams and Hoggets enjoy the bye, before gearing up for their away clash with the Hall Bushrangers and Wests Rugby Club.
