Redbacks comeback all too late

16/05/2008 10:27:00 AM
Yass Redbacks FC recorded two disappointing one goal losses on Saturday.

The Club House sponsored Yass Redbacks division seven side squared off against Gungahlin.

The visitors started the game stronger, holding and passing the ball with control, but the Redbacks’ defence didn’t give the opposition a chance. Yass had a few counter attack runs, coming close to scoring against the run of play.

Gungahlin soon had a speculating cross. Warren Parker managed to scramble and clear the ball off line, only for it to be struck by another Gungahlin player at the top of the box. It looked like it wouldn’t threaten debut goal keeper Lam Vu, but took a sharp deflection off Matt Betts and rocketed into the back of net.

The goal just about brought the half to a close with the Redbacks down a goal, still quite in the game.

The second half began and both teams fought hard for possession with the play bogging down into a midfield battle. Yass began stringing a few passes together, getting into some attacking positions. They were unable to get that final quality ball through.

Gungahlin then struck again! Play broke down and Gungahlin attacked fast, catching the backs off-guard.

With still plenty of time left in the game, Yass’ heads didn’t drop and after conceding a second goal managed to hold a majority of possession for the remainder of the match.

With a handful of corners and free kick chances, possession did lead to a Redbacks’ goal. From a corner, Cameron Betts calmly beat his man and found the back of the net.

It all ended up being a little too late for the Redbacks, going down 2-1 at home.
